Vixen was formed in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1973 by guitarist Jan Kuehnemund while still in high school. They were the first all female rock band from the Twin Cities. In 1984, an early version of the band with Kuehnemund, lead singer Janet Gardner and bassist Pia Maiocco (who later married guitarist Steve Vai) appeared in the movie Hardbodies, as the on-screen band Diaper Rash. In 1985, the band moved to Los Angeles, California to join the L.A. rock scene.

Lineup changes happened during the following years until the “classic lineup” of Janet Gardner, Jan Kuehnemund, Share Pedersen, and Roxy Petrucci was formed…

…In 2004, VH1 approached the four members of the “classic lineup” to appear on their show Bands Reunited. The show was recorded in August 2004 and broadcast in the U.S. in November 2004. Vixen continues to tour in 2023. However, the only remaining original member is drummer Roxy Petrucci.

What happened to the original singer of Vixen?
After the band split up in 1992, lead singer Janet Gardner, took some time off before reuniting with the band in 2013. Vixen had planned to reunite with the original members before guitarist Jan Kuehnemund was diagnosed with cancer and passed away. In 2019, Janet left band to devote more time to family and prioritize her solo career.

Was Vixen a one hit wonder?
The band should not be considered a one hit wonder because technically, Vixen had two hit sin the Billboard Top 40. Their songs “Edge Of A Broken Heart” hit #26 and “Cryin'” hit #22.
