Alice Cooper is widely regarded as the “Godfather of Shock Rock,” famous for combining hard rock music with horror-inspired stage theatrics, macabre makeup, and outrageous live performances. Born Vincent Damon Furnier in Detroit, Michigan, on February 4, 1948, he moved with his family to Phoenix, Arizona, where he formed a high school band with friends in the mid-1960s. Originally called the Earwigs, then the Spiders and the Nazz, the group adopted the name Alice Cooper in 1968 before relocating to Los Angeles and catching the attention of musician Frank Zappa, who signed them to his record label. The band’s breakthrough came with Love It to Death (1971), featuring the rebellious anthem “I’m Eighteen,” followed by Killer (1971) and School’s Out (1972), whose title track became one of rock’s most recognizable songs. Their 1973 album Billion Dollar Babies became a major commercial success, reaching No. 1 in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The original lineup featured Cooper on vocals, Glen Buxton and Michael Bruce on guitars, Dennis Dunaway on bass, and Neal Smith on drums. Their theatrical performances, featuring props such as electric chairs, fake blood, and guillotines, helped redefine the rock concert as a dramatic spectacle.
After the original group split, Furnier legally adopted the name Alice Cooper and launched a successful solo career with Welcome to My Nightmare in 1975, a theatrical concept album that produced the hit “Only Women Bleed.” He continued releasing music throughout the following decades, but his biggest commercial comeback arrived with Trash (1989), which featured “Poison,” his most successful solo-era hit and a major international chart success. Other popular songs include “You and Me,” “School’s Out,” “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” and “Feed My Frankenstein.” Cooper’s career achievements include a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2011 with the original Alice Cooper band, and a lasting influence on generations of hard rock and heavy metal performers. Cooper, now in his late 70s, remains active in music, continuing to tour with his theatrical stage show and performing for audiences worldwide. He has also continued recording with the surviving original band members, who reunited for The Revenge of Alice Cooper in 2025, their first new album together in more than 50 years. Beyond music, Cooper is known for his radio work, acting appearances, charity efforts, and lifelong passion for golf, making him one of rock’s most enduring and distinctive entertainers.
